Abstract

Healthcare involves not only the treatment of disease but also a moral responsibility to protect life and preserve human dignity. From an Islamic perspective, healthcare can be understood as a manifestation of Allah’s mercy through medical efforts, disease prevention, the alleviation of suffering, and compassion for others. This study aims to analyze the Islamic foundations for understanding healthcare as a manifestation of Allah’s mercy and to examine its implications for the professional responsibilities of healthcare workers. The study employed a qualitative approach using library research. Data were drawn from the Qur’an, hadith, Qur’anic exegesis, academic books, and official healthcare documents. The data were analyzed descriptively and qualitatively through identification, thematic categorization, interpretation, and narrative synthesis. The findings indicate that mercy in healthcare is associated with the protection of life, responsible medical efforts, compassion, justice, and respect for patients’ dignity. Healthcare workers serve as agents through whom these values can be expressed by providing competent, honest, empathetic, and nondiscriminatory care. Islamic values do not replace scientific evidence, professional standards, or applicable legal requirements; rather, they can strengthen the moral orientation of healthcare practice. The study concludes that integrating the value of mercy with professional responsibility offers a conceptual foundation for accountable and humane healthcare. As this study is based on literature review, its findings require further examination through empirical research.
