Abstract

The Halal literacy is an important consideration in medication selection among Muslim consumers, particularly regarding gelatin used in pharmaceutical capsule shells. This study aims to analyze gelatin sources, porcine gelatin authentication methods, and the relevance of halal literacy to medication selection. A literature review using descriptive qualitative analysis was conducted. The findings indicate that gelatin may originate from pigs, cattle, or fish. Therefore, its source should be verified through reliable product information or appropriate analytical methods, including polymerase chain reaction (PCR), spectroscopy, chromatography, and mass spectrometry. Halal literacy encompasses knowledge of ingredient origins, the ability to evaluate product information, and understanding of halal labeling. Strengthening halal literacy in pharmacy education is important to support informed and responsible medication selection while considering patient safety, efficacy, product quality, and therapeutic needs.
